Free Medical Clinic
In October of 2000, local physicians, with the support of the Medical Society, opened a free medical clinic known as Community Care Center (Centro Clinico to our Hispanic community) in a large, modern medical facility provided by Novant Health. The Medical Society continues its involvement, with its executive director, Jim Robinson, also serving as executive director of the clinic.
Community Care Center has grown to be the largest free medical clinic in North Carolina, providing multi-specialty health care and dental services to a patient base of about 13,000. To be eligible for services, family income must be below 200% of the federal poverty level and the individuals not be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, and not covered by private insurance. Applicants for services must go through a financial screening and provide documentation of family assets, income and expenses.
Over 100 volunteer physicians, both active and retired, and over 65 volunteer dentists handled over 17,000 patient visits in 2008. The market value of these free services and medications were over $6.5 million.
