History: The Doctors Care program was formed by the Forsyth-Stokes-Davie County Medical Society
in 1993 to approve applicants for free medical services provided in participating doctors' offices.
Through an agreement with area hospitals, free hospital care was also provided. Since 2004, the program
has changed in some respects and is now known as HealthCare Access, Inc.
The volunteer physicians who accept patients in their offices participate through the Doctors Care Network
of the Medical Society. In 2007, doctors and hospitals donated approximately $7 million of free care through
HealthCare Access.
HealthCare Access limits eligibility to families with incomes less than 200% of the federal poverty level
who are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare and who do not have private insurance. Many of the
HealthCare Access patients receive their medical services at Community Care Center.
